Fairfield will hold a Special Election for First Selectman on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.

For residents who may not be aware, former First Selectman Bill Gerber passed away unexpectedly on July 15, 2025. At the time, Christine Vitale was serving as Selectman, elected alongside Bill as his running mate in 2023. Following Bill’s tragic passing, Christine was appointed and duly sworn in as First Selectman to continue the work she and Bill were elected to do.

Although Christine is already Fairfield’s First Selectman, a special election has been forced by her opponent who petitioned to do so—an option permitted under the Town Charter, though neither required nor necessary. This means the Town must now hold a special election, which will come with added cost to taxpayers and require school closures, as most polling locations are located within Fairfield Public Schools.

Throughout the difficult transition following Bill’s death, Christine has led capably with steadiness, respect for the community, and a clear commitment to carrying forward the priorities she and Bill championed and were together elected to do. The Fairfield Democratic Town Committee fully supports electing Christine Vitale on February 3 so she can continue providing the consistent, forward‑looking leadership that Fairfield needs and deserves.
